Historical Note
The Department of General Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Course IX, was established in 1904 to provide a broad scientific education. It was especially adapted to meet the needs of future secondary school science teachers and students planning a business career. In 1920 an option in General Engineering was added which permitted students to graduate with a degree in both programs. In 1957 the decision was made to discontinue Course IX, and administration of the course was split between the Schools of Science and Engineering until the last student graduated in 1959
