Historical Note
The Department of Modern Languages was established at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by 1884. In 1925 it split into the Department of German and the Department of Romance Languages, and then reunited in 1929 to become the Department of Modern Languages. In 1965 the name changed to the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics.
