Abstract Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards, 1842-1911, attended Vassar College, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1870. Subsequently she applied for admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and in January 1871 became the first female student to attend, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1873 in chemistry. Also in 1873, she earned the degree of Master of Arts from Vassar College. In 1910, Smith College conferred the honorary degree Doctor of Science on Ellen Swallow...
