Abstract Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards, 1842-1911, attended Vassar College, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1870. Subsequently she applied for admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and in January 1871 became the first female student to attend, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1873 in chemistry.
