Project Whirlwind Memo M-1920. Two meetings, one on mechanical design of the general purpose plug in unit for WWII, and one on joint MIT-IBM component standards were held Tuesday, March 3; and one on drafting procedures was held on Wednesday, March 4. A number of proposals were made at the March 3 meetings. Final Decision on the plug in unit design will await construction of models and further proposal drawings, both due about May 1.

This meeting was the first of the series; tape drive troubles and XD-1 maintenance policy in general were discussed. IBM believes that the practice of cleaning the tape mechanism every 8 hours will markedly reduce tape failures, which caused about 25% of all MIT lost time in January. The area of agreement was wide, and the following text outlines what was decided by the committee. This memo is a proposal. Its contents should be criticized by both MIT and IBM personnel, and criticisms given to Edwards of IBM or Watt of MIT by Friday, June 19, so that final standards can be issued shortly.

About one full working day was spent discussing component and production problems with the members of the Vacuum Tube Analysis Lab and with shop personnel. Emphasis was placed on trying to decide what phases of component study should be undertaken first, for maximum mutual benefit. IBM inspection and test techniques were studied.
