Biographical Note
William Arthur Martin, 1938-1981, was an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He completed his education at MIT, where he earned an SB, 1960; SM, 1962; and PhD, 1967, in electrical engineering. In 1968 he became an assistant professor in management and electrical engineering at MIT and was promoted to associate professor in 1974. At the Laboratory for Computer Science and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory he helped develop MACSYMA, a computer system for applied mathematics, and PROTOSYSTEMS, an automatic programming system. He also worked in the field of computational linguistics.
