General Note

Pages from an illustrated article on the history of aeronautics by Gaston Tissandier, "Les aérostats et la navigation aérienne." The article was originally published in the January 1, 1885 issue of Paris Illustré, and included several prints from his own collection. Illustrations on these pages include a full page depicting Albert and Gaston Tissandier's balloon sailing in the clouds during their 1874 ascent in which they observed "haloes," an illustration of the inflation of Montgolfier’s balloon on Jan. 19, 1794, an illustration of Garnerin's parachute after it was detached from his balloon on Oct. 22, 1797, and a full page illustration of a sunset observed above the clouds by Albert and Gaston Tissandier.
