Biographical Note

Arthur C. Smith, 1929-2010, was raised in Oklahoma. He received a bachelor's degree in physics from Harvard University in 1954 and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard in 1958. He came to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1959 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering. He became an associate professor in 1963 and a professor in 1968. He served as Acting Dean for Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs from 1990 to 1991 and as Dean from 1991 to 1995.

Smith was also active within many committees at MIT. He served as chairman of the Committee on Academic Performance from 1972 to 1974, the Committee on Privacy from 1975 to 1977, the Committee on Student Affairs from 1979 to 1981, and the Committee on Educational Policy from 1983 to 1985. He also served as faculty chairman from 1983 to 1985 and was a member of the Minority Student Issues group.

The Arthur C. Smith Award was created in Smith's name in 1996 following the end of his tenure as dean. He received the Gordon Y. Billard Award for distinguished service to the university in 1987.
