Biography

Arthur Steinberg, 1937-, AB 1958, Harvard University; PhD 1966, University of Pennsylvania, was appointed assistant professor of history and archaeology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1964, associate professor of archaeology in 1970, and professor in 1994. He was also appointed director, Integrated Studies Program at MIT in 1988. He was appointed program head, Anthropology / Archaeology Program for three academic years, 1984-85 to 1986-87. He has served on numerous MIT committees and task forces concerned with educational policy. His research interests include the dynamics of complex societies; technologies and their relationship to other cultural processes; interactions between materials, techniques and styles in art and technology; and developing new approaches to curriculum and teaching. He has done field work in Cyprus and Turkey, and has been active in professional organizations such as the Archaeological Institute of America.
