Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence and background materials relating to early work on the barcode technology and to the company founded by Esserian, Charecogn Systems, Inc. Materials date from approximately 1960 to 1967.

Biographical Note

Armen John Esserian earned a SB degree in economics and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1951. He was employed at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory from 1954 to 1955. In 1960 Esserain formed Charecogn Systems, Inc. to develop and manufacture data gathering systems using optical scanning pattern recognition techniques.
