Biographical note

Arthur Kent Kerman (1929-2017), was professor emeritus of physics at the Massachusetts of Technology (MIT). He earned a B.Sc. in 1950 in physics and mathematics from McGill University and a Ph.D. in 1953 at MIT. At MIT he was assistant professor of physics, 1956-1960; associate professor, 1960-1964; full professor, 1964-1999; and professor emeritus, 1999-2017. He was the Director of MIT’s Center for Theoretical Physics from 1976 to 1983 and the Director of the Laboratory for Nuclear Science from 1983 to 1992.

Kerman’s research revolved around nuclear and high-energy physics, astrophysics, and the development of advanced particle detectors. He published or co-published more than 100 academic papers and advised 43 students over a span of 47 years. Kerman was named a Guggenheim Fellow in Natural Sciences and was associate editor of Reviews of Modern Physics.
