George F. Swain papers
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The collection contains student notes and course notes of George F. Swain from his time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (approximately mid-1870s to 1919). One volume of course notes from Swain's class "Structures" was owned by John Neil Ferguson, MIT 1894, who worked for the Metropolitan Water Board of Massachusetts and went on to become Chief Engineer for the Division of Waterways. Ferguson's handwritten notes can be found throughout the volume.
Also included in the collection are expense books and statistical reports from the Department of Civil Engineering, dating from the 1880s to early 1900s.

Biographical Note
George Fillmore Swain, SB, 1877, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He taught Civil Engineering at MIT (1881-1909; 1914-1919), serving as head of the department from 1887 to 1911, and also taught at Harvard University.
