Scope and Contents of the Collection

About half of the collection consists of Scatchard’s published works (boxes 3, 5, and 6). The collection also contains biographical material, including a substantial amount of correspondence relating to his awards and honors (boxes 1 and 2). Also included is a photograph album, which contains pictures from his military service, and a few portraits.

Biography

George Scatchard, 1892-1973, BA 1913, Amherst College; PhD 1917, Columbia University, joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1923 and remained there, except for the World War II years, until his death. His was an authority on the physical chemistry of solutions. In 1928 Scatchard was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1946, a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences. Scatchard received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Amherst College in 1948. He was awarded the American Chemical Society’s Theodore William Richards Medal in 1954 and received the Kendall Award in Colloid Science 1962 for his work in physical chemistry. The unpublished manuscripts of Scatchard’s texts on chemical thermodynamics and colloids have been published as Equilibrium in Solutions and Surface and Colloid Chemistry (1976).
