Lotte Kohler correspondence with Elzbieta Ettinger
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The collection consists primarily of correspondence between Lotte Kohler, a trustee of the Hannah Arendt Literary Trust, and Massachusetts Instittue of Technology lecturer Elzbieta Ettinger about Ettinger’s work writing a biography of Hannah Arendt (published in 1994). The letters reflect their discussions relating to that work, the bulk of the letters between 1989 and 1993. Additional correspondence continued through 2000. A small number of photocopies of background material are also included.

Biography
Lotte Kohler is a trustee of the Hannah Arendt Literary Trust. She was a professor at City College, New York, and editor of “Within Four Walls: The Correspondence between Hannah Arendt and Heinrich Blucher, 1937-1968” and editor, with Hans Saner of “Hannah Arendt, Karl Jaspers: Correspondece, 1926-1969”
Elzbieta Ettinger served as professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the MIT Program in Writing and Humanistic Studies from 1975 to 1996, where she was named Thomas Meloy Professor of Rhetoric and Literature. Ettinger earned a Ph.D. in American literature from Warsaw University in 1966; she moved to Cambridge Massachusetts in 1967 and became a fellow of the Radcliffe Institute. Her publications included the novels “Kindergarten” (1968), describing her experiences during World War II in her native Warsaw, Poland, “Quicksand” (1989), and the biographies “Rosa Luxemburg, A Life” (1987), and the 1994 biography “Hannah Arendt-Martin Heidegger”.
