Scope and Contents

The collection documents the professional activities of Bernard J. Frieden from approximately 1970 to 1998. Most of the materials relate to Frieden's relationship with the Department of Urban Studies and Planning and the School of Architecture and Planning. Materials include correspondence, biographical materials and publications, and project materials related to military base redevelopment and downtown and shopping malls.

Biographical Note

Bernard J. Frieden, 1930-2009, was Ford Professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received a BA from Cornell, MA from Penn State, and his MCP from MIT in 1957. Frieden received MIT's first PhD in city planning in 1962, with his dissertation published as The Future of Old Neighborhoods: Rebuilding for a Changing Population. Frieden joined the planning faculty in 1961 and was a part of MIT faculty until his passing. Frieden was director of the MIT/Harvard Joint Center for Urban Planning from 1972-1975 and director of research at MIT’s Center for Real Estate from 1985-1987. (1)
