The majority of the papers of Donald R. F. Harleman consist of correspondence, notes, reports, drafts, conference materials, lecture transcripts, and articles related to Donald Harleman's consulting work involving the prevention of tidal flooding in Venice, Italy. Some reports and publications are in Italian. Also included are several folders related to Harleman's consulting work for Qatar Vinyl Company Ltd. involving its wastewater treatment plant.

Donald R. Harleman, 1922-2005, was Ford Professor of Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1975 to 1991, thereafter emeritus. He received a B.S. degree (1943) from Pennsylvania State University, then S.M. (1947) and Sc.D degrees (1950), from MIT. He was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering at MIT in 1950, becoming Professor of Civil Engineering in 1963. He served as head of the Water Resources and Environmental Engineering Division from 1972 to 1983 and as director of the Ralph Parsons Laboratory for Water Resources and Hydrodynamics from 1973 to 1983. In 2000, MIT established the Donald and Martha Harleman Professorship to support a faculty member whose service within and outside the Institute extends the example set by the Harlemans.
