Biographical Note

Edward Cohen (1940-2002) was a composer, performer, and senior lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Cohen received his BA in music from Brandeis University in 1961 and his MA from the University of California at Berkeley in 1965. He taught at Brandeis for 13 years in addition to lecturing at Harvard University before he taught at MIT in 1977. (1) He was promoted to senior lecturer in 1982. Cohen was an active composer, creating many pieces ranging from freestyle jazz to full length operas. His pieces have been performed in locations such as the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA (2) and the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia, where Cohen guest lectured on New Music. (3) He remained active at MIT until his passing in 2002.
