Historical note
The Office of Minority Education (OME) was established in 1975 to assist minority students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The office participates in the Institute's affirmative action efforts to recruit and retain minority students by implementing programs and activities to supplement MIT's usual educational resources; this provides minority students with greater opportunity to successfully complete their undergraduate education. The head of OME reports to the Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs.
The heads of the Office of Minority Education included: Wesley L. Harris, 1975 1979; Arthur C. Smith, acting head, 1979 1980; Clarence G. Williams, acting head 1980 1982; William D. McLauring, 1982 1985; Joyce Taylor Gibson, 1985 1988; Patricia Karouma, 1988 1989; Judy Jackson (formerly Judy Pitts), 1989 1994; David Wilson, interim director, 1994-1995; Leo Osgood, 1995-present (as of 1999).
