Biographical Note
David Staelin, 1938-2011, was a professor emeritus in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who specialized in radio astronomy and remote sensing for climate monitoring. (1) Staelin received his SB in 1960, SM in 1961, and ScD in 1965 all from MIT. He joined his department as a researcher in 1965. (2) In 1968 he became an associate professor [3] before being promoted to a full professor in 1975. (4) Staelin served as the Cecil H. Green Professor of Electrical Engineering in 1987 for 3 years (5) before leaving the department to work as the Assistant Director of the Lincoln Laboratory. (6) He rejoined EECS in 2001 (7) and served on the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee from 2003-2005. (8)
Staelin worked on multiple external projects in addition to his work at MIT, including a year at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Greenbank, WV (9) and a position as a co-investigator for the 1977 Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft missions. On campus he worked to further the careers of students, co-founding MIT’s Venture Mentoring Service. (10) Staelin was a long time member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). (11) He is honored with multiple awards such as the IEEE Signal Processing Society’s Senior Award, (12) the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Prize Paper Award, (13) and the 2011 John Howard Dellinger Medal from the International Union of Radio Science (URSI).
