Scope and Contents

This collection documents some of the work of Sheila Widnall, who was faculty in the School of Engineering and served as Associate Provost. Materials in the collection span the 1970s-2000s.

The 16.07 Dynamics course materials are from the Stellar teaching course websites from the course Widnall taught from 2004-2015,2017. They are all digital files and primarily consist of PDF documents and Matlab files.

Biographical / Historical

Sheila Widnall earned her SB (1960), SM (1961), and ScD (1964) in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1964 she was appointed to the faculty of the School of Engineering, the first woman to be appointed to a faculty position in that School. In 1979 she became the first woman to chair the MIT faculty. She also served as Associate Provost at MIT from 1992 to 1993, and as Secretary of the Air Force from 1993 to 1997. She was appointed as Institute Professor, the highest honor awarded by the MIT faculty and administration, in 1998.
