Historical Note

In 1890, Eta Sigma Mu was founded as the first club for women students at MIT. At first it was a select group, but that changed soon after. It was a social club holding regular Friday teas for its members and receptions more broadly for the Institute. In 1897, the name was changed to Cleofan.
