Scope and Contents of the Collection
In 1890, the Glee Club, Banjo Club, and Mandolin Club joined to create the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Combined Musical Clubs. After several dormant periods and name changes, the Combined Musical Clubs reappeared in 1908 and persisted as an umbrella organization for undergraduate musical groups until 1986. The collection includes correspondence, photographs, financial and administrative reports, brochures, concert programs, and a scrapbook.
The collection is arranged into three series. Series 1, Administrative Records, includes correspondence, photographs, and financial and administrative reports of the Combined Musical Clubs, arranged chronologically from 1927 to 1969. Series 2, Programs, Brochures, and Club Correspondence, includes materials related to individual musical clubs and concerts given. Material in the series is arranged by club, then chronologically, covering 1884 thorough 1972. Groups represented are the Baton Society, Chamber Players, Choral Society, Concert Band, and Glee Club. Of note is a scrapbook of combined groups, covering the period 1930-1942, located in box 7. Series 3, Musical Scores, consists of handwritten scores for six works.

Historical note
In 1890, the Glee Club, Banjo Club, and Mandolin Club joined to create the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Combined Musical Clubs. Each club retained its own leader and manager, but was under the control of the association. In 1892, the organization changed its name to the Technology Glee and Banjo Clubs, and in 1894 changed again to the Technology Glee, Banjo, and Mandolin Clubs. The association was dormant for two years, but was reborn as Musical Clubs. The group dissolved once again, only to reappear in 1908 as the Combined Musical Clubs, an umbrella organization for undergraduate band and choral groups at the Institute. Combined Musical Clubs persisted as an umbrella heading for MIT's musical groups until 1986.
