Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Class Photograph Albums

The collection consists of class photograph albums which contain portrait photographs (primarily individual) of class members, faculty, and administrators of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Many of the portrait subjects are identified by name. Some of the albums group the portraits by course and include labeled photographs of classrooms, laboratories, buildings, and workshops, and group photographs. The albums span the graduating classes of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1870 through 1893, although some years are not represented. The class of 1868 was the first to graduate from MIT, so these albums contain photographs of the earliest students and faculty members.

Volume 1 contains identified photographs of faculty, staff, and students, volume 2 photographs are not identified; volume 3 contains identified photographs of faculty, staff, and students and a photograph of MIT buildings. Volume 4 photographs are partially identified and the volume also contains a photograph of MIT buildings. The class of 1888 album (volume 11 and box 23) contains identified portrait photographs of class members and group photographs of students, classrooms, and laboratories.

Series 2 materials primarily consist of loose cabinet photographs of various MIT students and faculty members, circa 1893. Many of the photographs are duplicates of those in volumes 18 through 20 (class of 1893), although not all of the photographs have been identified and several may be originals.
