Historical note

In December 1972 Dean Robert L. Bishop of the School of Humanities and Social Science appointed a Technology Steering Committee to identify goals and make proposals for an interdisciplinary program in humanities and technology. Courses in technology studies were first offered in the fall of 1976 to undergraduate students who sought “to understand the place of science and technology in civilization.” In 1976 the Technology Studies Program was succeeded by the Program in Science, Technology, and Society. Professor of English Louis Bucciarelli was head of the Technology Studies Program.
