Historical Note

The Special Program for Urban and Regional Studies of Developing Areas (SPURS) is a non-degree program established in 1967 in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Department of Urban Studies and Planning by Professor Lloyd Rodwin, financed in part with a grant in international studies from the Ford Foundation. It provides an opportunity for students to spend a year at MIT studying the problems of urban and regional changes within a broad context of national development.
