Historical Note

The Department of Geology and Mining, as Course III, was formed when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology opened in 1865. In 1871 the course was renamed Geology and Mining Engineering, and in 1892 Geology was made a separate department. In 1920, Geology rejoined Course III, which was renamed the Department of Mining, Metallurgy, and Geology. Geology was separated into its own department again in 1926, and from there underwent several name changes: Department of Geology and Geophysics (1952), Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (1969), and, as it is currently known, Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (1983).
