Historical note

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Committee on the Visual Arts is appointed by the president of MIT. Composed of faculty, administration, and student members, it was established in 1966 to act as a coordinating body for the non-curricular program in the visual arts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The committee’s responsibilities included the organization of the Hayden Galleries’ exhibition and publication program, the development and curatorial care of a permanent art collection as well as two student loan collections, and the sponsorship of a variety of educational activities designed to elucidate issues in contemporary art. In 1989, with the establishment of a new position, Associate Provost for the Arts and the establishment of the Office of the Arts, the Committee on the Visual Arts, previously the advisory group to the List Visual Arts Center Staff, was disbanded.
