Scope and Contents
The collection includes some correspondence, subscription records, and office manuals of the Tech Engineering News, a monthly professional journal published by undergraduates at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology working with alumni and faculty. It was originally conceived of as a supplement to the student newspaper,The Tech, in 1919, when Tech advertising manager Ray St. Laurent discovered that some businesses preferred to advertise in a college technical journal rather than a college newspaper. Volume I of the operations manual documents the founding of the journal. It includes original art work and photographs of staff. The collection also includes a history written in 1966.
The first volume of Tech Engineering News was published in 1920 and the last (volume 60, no. 1) was published in 1976. Journal volumes have been preserved as part of the publications collection of the Institute Archives and Special Collections, classified as TA1.T4.
