Historical note

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was represented in an exhibit of institutions of higher learning at the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893. MIT occupied 1,100 square feet of exhibit space in two alcoves, flanked by the University of Michigan on one side and Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia on the other. MIT’s exhibit included photographs of buildings, rooms, laboratories, and students; charts providing information about student life; student theses and course work; and portfolios offering information on MIT’s history, administration, and methods of instruction.

The World’s Columbian Exposition (also called the Chicago World’s Fair) was a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the New World. The Chicago fairgrounds opened on May 1, 1893, and closed on October 30, 1893.
