Scope and Contents of the Collection

This collection contains records of the Society of Women Engineers student section at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It includes minutes, membership lists, event documents and promotional material for the society and women in engineering. Records in the collection of the MIT student organization date as early as 1952. As the national organization Society of Women Engineers was founded in 1950, MIT's section is one of the earliest affiliates.

Historical note

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) was founded in 1950 as a non-profit educational and service organization to support and advance careers of women in the engineering professions. The Society was formally incorporated in 1952. The MIT SWE student section was one of the first. In 1976, SWE membership was opened to men.
