Scope and Contents of the Collection

The substance though not the bulk of the papers consists of letters from Henry Darwin Rogers to his nephew William Barton Rogers II, son of James Blythe Rogers. From 1852 to about 1857 William Barton Rogers II worked as an assistant to Henry D. Rogers on the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. The papers of are interest because they shed light on the working methods of the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania.

The collection includes correspondence from Henry Darwin Rogers instructing William Barton Rogers II in survey methods, and requesting progress reports on his work with the survey. Also included is William Barton Rogers II's personal correspondence with his father, James Blythe Rogers, and uncle, Robert Empie Rogers; papers concerning family history; and pamphlets about family members and on scientific subjects.

The value of this collection is also in its use in conjunction with the William Barton Rogers papers, MC 1, the Rogers family papers, MC 2, and the published volumes of The Life and Letters of William Barton Rogers.

William Barton Rogers II, 1833-1893, son of James Blythe Rogers and nephew of William Barton Rogers, the founder and first president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was an amateur scientist who worked as an assistant to another uncle, geologist Henry Darwin Rogers, on the Pennsylvania Geological Survey from 1852 to approximately 1857. He later became a banker and served the Western Savings Fund Society of Philadelphia for 30 years.
