Scope and Contents

This collection contains financial statements created by the treasurers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) including trial and final balances, estimates of property value, summaries of accounts kept by the treasurer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in its early years when its campus was in Boston's Back Bay area. The records cover the period of 1865 to 1883. The collection also contains summary reports of the treasurer, handwritten from 1865 to 1874 and 1876 to 1877, and printed reports, 1881 to 1883.

Historical Note

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was chartered April 10, 1861 and was formally organized at a meeting in May 1862. The first treasurer was Charles H. Dalton (1862-1866) followed by William Endicott (1866-1872) and John Cummings (1872-1906).
