Scope and Contents of the Collection

The collection consists of supporting documents for and transcripts of interviews of Dr. Harriet Hardy, Dr. Warren Point and Hans-Lukas Teuber on the subjects of the committee on the Use of Humans as Experimental Subjects at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The interviews were conducted by Charlotte Fishman, an instructor in philosophy who taught a seminar in medical ethics.

Historical note

The Committee on the Use of Humans as Experimental Subjects was established a the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1962 to oversee all research projects which used students as subjects. Later the committee's charge expanded to review experiments that included staff, faculty, and others as well. In 1976 Hans-Lukas Teuber, professor and head of the department of psychology at MIT, and Drs. Harriet Hardy and Warren Point of the MIT Medical Department were interviewed to discuss the reasons for the establishment of the committee.
