Scope and Contents of the Collection

The collection consists of personal correspondence written by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Alumnus Francis Goodale from Europe, Hawaii, the Far East, and Peru; in most he describes his experiences as an engineer on sugar plantations in the Philippines and Peru. Also included are two notebooks: one consisting of correspondence, reports, architectural drawings, and photographs regarding the set up of the Hawaiian Philippine Co. sugar cane factory in the Philippine Islands; the other contains factory data, architectural drawings, and photographs regarding the Ottawa Sugar Co., Ottawa, Ohio. Both companies manufactured granulated sugar. Also contains an MIT entrance examination, 5 June 1871, which belonged to Goodale's father, Charles W. Goodale, class of 1875.

Francis Goodale, (1865-1977), S.B. in sanitary engineering, 1917, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was a mechanical engineer in the sugar refining industry working in the Philippines, Peru, and the United States.
