Scope and Contents of the Collection

The papers of Lan Jen Chu consist of correspondence, minutes, and teaching materials documenting Chu's career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Also included are subject files, working notes and calculations, reports, and some correspondence relating to his research in the field of microwaves with the MIT Radiation Laboratory and the U.S. Navy Electronics Laboratory.

Lan Jen Chu, 1913-1973, B.S. in electrical engineering, 1934, Chiang Tung University, Kiangsu, China; S.M. 1935 and Sc.D. 1938 in electrical engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, served as a consultant to the MIT Radiation Laboratory on magnetrons, transmission lines, and wave propagation problems when the laboratory was organized in 1940. From 1942 to 1946 he was on the staff, first with the Theoretical Group, then with the Antenna Group, where he supervised the research and design of sophisticated radar antenna systems. He was associate professor of electrical engineering at MIT, 1947-1952; professor, 1952-1963; and Edwin Sibley Webster Professor of Elecrical Engineering, 1963-1973. The focus of his research was eletromagnetic theory and its applications to microwave beam tubes as well as antennas.
