Biography

Bernard Emerson Proctor, 1901-1959, S.B. in biology and public health, 1923; Ph.D. 1927, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, began teaching at MIT in 1927 as instructor in the Department of Biology and Public Health. He became assistant professor in 1930, associate professor in 1936, and professor of food technology in 1944. In 1945 he was appointed director of the newly established Samuel Cate Prescott Laboratories of Food Technology at MIT, and in 1951 he was made head of the Department of Food Technology. His research included studies on the microbiology of the upper atmosphere, the uses of epoxides as germicidal agents, and the use of radiation to preserve foods.
