Scope and Contents of the Collection
The collection about James Watt contains three signed letters: February 1794, from James Watt to Zacheus Walker concerning a patent protection suit; January 1813, from James Watt to William Murdock concerning specifications for a lathe; and March 1801, from Matthew Boulton (Watt's business partner) to the Duke of Portland concerning the immigration of workmen to America.

Biography
James Watt, 1736-1819, was an engineer in England whose invention of a condensing vessel in 1765 led to an improved steam engine, which was patented in 1769. The unit of power, the watt, was named after him.
Matthew Boulton, 1728-1809, was an engineer and also partner of James Watt in the development of the steam engine.
