Historical note
The first meeting of the Experimental Study Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was held September 18, 1968. The group consisted of both faculty and students. MIT president Howard Johnson opened the meeting and expressed his support, the idea originating in a discussion in 1967 between Howard Johnson and physics professor George Valley. Johnson requested a report back from the group by January 1, 1969.
