Biographical / Historical

Roy Lamson, 1908-1986, A.B. 1929, A.M. 1930, Ph.D. 1936, Harvard University, was an instructor in English and tutor in modern languages at Harvard, 1935-1938; he was then on the faculty of Williams College, 1938-1957, where he also served as dean of freshmen, 1953-1957. During World War II he was historian with the War Department, and from 1943 to 1946, he was editor of the Armed Forces Action series. From 1951 to 1953, on leave of absence from Williams College, he was historian and staff advisor at the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Powers in Europe. He came to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a visiting professor in 1957 and was professor in the Department of Humanities from 1958 to 1973, when he retired as Class of 1922 Professor of Literature emeritus. He was founder of the Council for the Arts at MIT and created course XXI, the Humanities and Science and Humanities and Technology programs. His special interest as a scholar was the English Renaissance, and he wrote extensively on ballads and 17th century music.
