Biographical Note

Carl E. Hewitt, PhD in Mathematics, 1971, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is professor emeritus in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the MIT. He was assistant professor, (1971-1976); associate professor, (1976-2000); and is currently professor emeritus since 2000. (1) As a doctoral student he developed the Planner programming language with the MIT Artificial Intelligence laboratory and built upon this work in his career as a professor to develop the ACTOR model of computing, which he worked on for over 30 years with his Message Passing Semantics Group at MIT (2).
