Biographical Note
Joel Moses (1941-) is a professor emeritus of computer science and engineering systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his BS and MS in mathematics from Columbia University, and PhD in mathematics in 1967 from MIT. Professor Marvin Minsky was the advisor for his doctoral thesis, Symbolic Integration. He was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering shortly after completing his thesis in 1971. He became a full professor in 1977 and associate head for computer science and engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) the following year. (1) He became the head of the same department in 1981, and stayed in that role until 1989. He became an Institute Professor in 1999.
The Project MAC Symbol Manipulator (MACSYMA) system was created largely under Professors Moses and William A. Martin’s supervision in the MATHLAB Project between 1969 and 1983. The MIT Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS) gave Moses the LCS Achievement Award for his work on MACSYMA in 1984. (2)
Moses also served many other leadership roles at MIT including Dean of Engineering (1991-1995), Provost (1995-1998), Interim Director of Engineering Systems Division (2006-2007), and Acting Director of the Center for Technology, Policy and Industrial Development (2007-2010).
