Scope and Contents of the Collection
Collection includes files on conferences, seminars, and lectures in which Rose participated, 1969-1984; records of his involvement with the 1979 World Council of Churches meetings held at MIT; information about projects he consulted on for government, industry, and other organizations, including the carbon dioxide energy projects for the National Science Foundation; extensive files documenting his activities as a faculty member at MIT, including information on curriculum development, faculty meetings, student records, and courses he initiated in the MIT Department of Nuclear Engineering; and materials relating to his participation in professional societies.

Biography
David J. Rose, 1922-1985, BASc in engineering physics, 1947, University of British Columbia; PhD 1950, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, joined the MIT faculty in 1958, becoming professor of nuclear engineering in 1960, and remaining at MIT for the rest of his professional life. He was the first director of the Office of Long-range Planning, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, 1969-1970. He wrote over 150 articles ranging from high technology to theology, and with Melville Clark wrote Plasmas and Controlled Fusion, which became the standard textbook in the field of fusion energy. His work focused on fusion technology, energy, nuclear waste disposal, and the ethical problems arising from developments in science and technology.
