Biography

Dirk Jan Struik, 1894-2000, PhD 1922, Leiden University, The Netherlands, came to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a lecturer in mathematics in 1926 and was appointed assistant professor in 1928, associate professor in 1931, professor in 1940, and became emeritus in 1960. During his career Struik taught both mathematics and history of science with particular attention to the role played by social forces. His books on mathematics and the history of science include Yankee Science in the Making (1948) and A Concise History of Mathematics (1948). He edited A Source Book in Mathematics, 1200-1800 (1969), and The Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, by Karl Marx (1964). He has also written articles on many topics including differential and multidimensional geometry, tensor and vector calculus, history of mathematics and early American science, and the history of 16th century Dutch scientists.
