Samuel M. Felton diary and student notes
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The collection consists of the diary of Samuel M. Felton, a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The diary covers the time period June 10, 1872 to July 16, 1872, describing his travels through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, Colorado, and the Rocky Mountains. The diary includes sketches of bridges and a list entitled "Dimensions of some of the longest - spans in the country - Trusses," which gives names, location, number of spans and length of eight bridges of the Newport and Cincinnati Railroad. The diary and sketches are in pencil. The topics of the diary are related to the subject of Felton's 1873 bachelor thesis. A set of Felton's student notes for a class are also included in this collection.

Biography
Samuel Morse Felton, 1853-1930, S.B. in mechanical engineering, 1873, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was also a member of the MIT Corporation, 1887-1903. He was a railroad executive whose positions with various railroads included general manager, New York & New England; vice president, New York, Lake Erie & Western; and the presidencies of the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific, the Alabama Great Southern Railroad, the Chicago & Alton, and the Mexican Central Railroad.
