Biography

J. Francis Reintjes, 1912-2008, was a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His career at MIT focused on research in numerical control, and information storage and retrieval.

Reintjes earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1934. He worked as an engineer at General Motors and then as an instructor at Manhattan College. In 1943 Reintjes joined MIT as an instructor in the war time radar school training program. Following World War II he worked as a research staff member in the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics until 1947 when he was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineeering. He was promoted to associate professor in 1953 and later professor in 1956. Additionally in 1953 Reintjes was appointed director of the Servomechanisms Laboratory (later renamed the Electronic Systems Laboratory) and served as its director for 21 years.
