Scope and Contents

Appears to be a volume, or part of a volume, of photographs of Kashmir. Has not yet been compared with the numerous Samuel Bourne photographic albums and/or volumes published online by The J. Paul Getty Museum. May be described or identified further as additional information becomes known. The language of image captions may be Dutch, or German. There are images of nature, trees, mountains, gardens, including Shalimar Gardens, also bridges, towns, and architecture. The pages are held together with stitching, and it is still partially intact as one block, with some threads loose, there is no front or back cover, or way to tell currently if pages or possibly whole signatures are missing.

20 item(s) (Phase box containing the volume or album, or partial volume or album) : 20 heavy paper pages, with original printed photographs mounted on them, which are warping slightly, pages have gold on edges, and are annotated with captions, pages are sewn together loosely in signatures, there are no covers (front or back), or pages of text ; Pages are circa 18 x 20 inches, including the border with design rules about 2 inches around the outside of the mounted photographs. Phase box is circa .5 inches thick.

Physical Description

Photographs sewn together as a book, but may be a partial book, has no cover, title page or index. Unclear where it is from, may be German. Top photograph is foxing. All of the pages are warping from the photographs affixed to them. Whole thing smelled musty and was aired out and placed in a chamber with charcoal in the Wunsch Conservation Lab, where it was determined that the smell is not from mold, and not harmful.
