Samuel Wesley Stratton was the eighth president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), serving from 1923 to 1930. In 1931 he became the first chairman of the MIT Corporation. Earlier, as head of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey’s Office of Weights and Measures, he developed the plan for a bureau of standards.
